Abstract:
The article examines the role of pesantren, the traditional Islamic institution of learning, in the process of civil society empowerment and democratization in contemporary Indonesia. It explores how the pesantren deal with issues like democracy, human rights, pluralism, inter-ethnic and inter-religious tolerance, and secular institutionalization. It also discusses the pesantren-state relationship and the views shared by pesantren leaders and activists after the fall of Suharto's regime in 1998.
